What does it tell me?

Wind is expressed as the average forecast speed, in miles per hour (mph), of wind gusts in a certain freight Key Market Area (KMA) for the next 48 hours. This is updated hourly. A gust is defined by the National Weather Service (NWS) as “a sudden, brief increase in speed of the wind”. According to U.S. weather observing practice, gusts are reported when the peak wind speed reaches at least 18 mph (16 knots), and the variation in wind speed between the peaks and lulls is at least 10 mph. The duration of a gust is usually less than 20 seconds.
