A monthly measure of the number of motor carriers with an active USDOT number recorded by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and provided to us by Carrier Details who report having at least one tractor and are authorized for interstate commerce.
Note: Carrier Details is currently able to provide these values as far back as September 1, 2022. Before then, the values are sourced directly from the FMCSA and then adjusted to match the level initially reported by Carrier Details.
**Typically there is a 12-24 month delay in reporting as a carrier must show 0 miles driven for 12 months before authority is revoked and takes months for that to be recognized**

Counts of fleets are a measure of active carriers in the truckload market. The number of motor carriers with active DOT numbers is an indicator of capacity expansion or contraction in the trucking industry. Carriers can have multiple pieces of equipment, which are captured by the datasets related to counts of tractors. Increasing counts of fleets and tractors are indicative of a healthy/growing trucking market with capacity being added, while declining counts indicate there is insufficient demand to support the available capacity.
The data is broken out in the following fleet categories:
FCTC – Carrier Details Total Count of Fleets
FCFH – Carrier Details Total Count of Fleets Authorized For Hire
TCTC – Carrier Details Total Count of Tractors
TCFH – Carrier Details Total Count of Tractors from Fleets Authorized For Hire
