Carloads originated (ORAILCAR) and carloads received (RRAILCAR) are a set of indices broken down by commodity, as well as total carloads, showing how many carloads started on the specified railway and how many carloads began on a separate railway but terminated on the specified railway, respectively. These indices are for each Class I railroad and all Class I railroads.

The indices show the amount (in carloads) of each commodity moved by train, for each of the Class I railroads, as well as total carloads and all of the Class I railroads. This even includes intermodal trailers and containers. Being able to map out movements by each railroad will give a generalization of where each of the commodities are being moved, since each railroad operates in specific areas and directions. For instance, using ORAILCARAUTO.KSU and RRAILCARAUTO.KSU would show all of the carloads carrying motor vehicles and parts originated on Kansas City Southern as well as carloads that did not start on the railway, but was terminated on the railway. One could see movement of motor vehicles and parts from Mexico into the United States, or the other way around.
