The Dry Van Headhaul Index (VHAUL) calculates the difference between the Dry Van Outbound Tender Volume Index (VOTVI) and the Dry Van Inbound Tender Volume Index (VITVI). The Dry Van Headhaul Index will calculate the difference between the two indices, and therefore, the difference between outbound and inbound volume in markets.
Example: VOTVI.ATL was 250 as of August 1. VITVI.ATL was 200 as of August 1. VHAUL.ATL would be equal to VOTVI.ATL (250) minus VITVI.ATL (200), VHAUL.ATL = 50.

The Dry Van Headhaul Index is a good indicator of capacity changes for dry van equipment. For example, if the spread between VOTVI and VITVI increases, it could indicate capacity may be decreasing. This is a good way to evaluate change in available capacity over time.
Example: A user wants to see the headhaul index for the Atlanta market. They would type VHAUL.ATL
